Mary O’Hara was born in 1935 in Sligo, Ireland, to John and Mai (Kirwan) O'Hara. She was the youngest of four siblings: Joan, Angela (who was raised by her paternal grandmother), and Dermot. Her family was Catholic, and faith played an important role throughout O'Hara's life. Selig was an American poet. Educated at the University of Washington, he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. Returning to the U.S. in 1956, he worked in the public relations department of Western Electric. He died of Hodgkin's disease in 1957. Walter, a native of Mobile, Ala., was a poet and novelist who translated the scripts of and assisted Italian movie director Federico Fellini.
